Description

The four-masted bark Pamir was built in 1905 for the F. Laeisz Hamburg shipyard and was one of the Flying P liners famed for their speed and reliability. According to tradition, she had a name beginning with "P". The Pamir won the Grain Race of 1932 and in 1949 rounded Cape Horn as the last great cargo-carrying sailing ship without engines. In 1950s the Pamir, like the Passat, was used as a cargo-carrying sail-training vessel for the German merchant navy. The Pamir sank in a hurricane on 21st September 1957 during her return voyage from Buenos Aires bound for Hamburg. 80 of the crew of 86 lost their lives. This shipwreck received a great deal of attention in the international media and brought to an end the life of cargo-carrying sail-training ships. This model has a two-part hull and a detailed deck with planking. Numerous details, such as the ship's bell, six life boats and 34 textured sails are included. It also contains yarn for rigging. In addition to the extensive flag table there are ready-made shrouds.
